English Department Programmes

Mission:

To develop confident English Language users who have a strong foundation in the language and love reading.

 

English Department Programmes:

 

1)      STELLAR Programme (Primary 1 to Primary 6)

The school’s English Language curriculum is based on the STELLAR programme. STELLAR, which stands for STrategies for English Language Learning And Reading, aims to strengthen pupils’ language and reading skills. The programme uses research-based teaching strategies and age-appropriate materials to engage pupils as they learn to effectively use the English Language. The teaching approaches and resources are designed to deliver the outcomes of English Language Syllabus 2010. 2)      Learning Support Programme for English (Primary 1 and 2)

Learning Support Programme (LSP) is an early intervention programme, aimed to provide learning support to children entering Primary 1 with weak language and literacy skills. Pupils enlisted into this programme are those who have shown these traits from a screening test conducted in school. The programme supports pupils up to 2 years and equips them with basic reading and spelling skills. The important feature of the programme is that pupils are grouped with peers of similar ability and the 30-minute lesson is conducted daily during curriculum time. The size of each group is between 8 to 10 pupils.

 

3)      Read-A-Mania Programme (Primary 1 and 2)

Read-A-Mania is a reading programme which aims to encourage our pupils to enjoy reading and make reading a way of life. As such, we provide them with a variety of reading titles to choose from. In this programme, emergent readers will read aloud to Reading Mums.

 

4)      Poetry Recitation (Primary 1)

To develop pupils’ speaking and presentation skills, pupils are taught poetry recitation skills in this programme. Pupils experiment with tempo, rhythm, pitch and juncture as they read and present their poems as effectively as possible.

 

5)      Speech and Drama (Primary 2)

To support pupils’ oral language development and their literacy learning at Primary 2, pupils are exposed to simple drama techniques. They learn to use both verbal and non-verbal language in a meaningful context.

 

6)      Watching Plays (Primary 3 and Primary 4)

To develop pupils aesthetically, the school sends its Primary 3 and Primary 4 pupils out to watch plays.  As students watch and listen to the actors perform the play, they predict what will happen next, appreciate the beauty of the English Language and make connections to other experiences.

 

7)      Subscription to Little Red Dot (Primary 3 to Primary 6)

Our Primary 3 to Primary 6 pupils are encouraged to subscribe to the Little Red Dot, a newspaper publication by the Straits Times. The newspaper focuses on English language learning, news and current events. Elements of social emotional learning, values education and National Education are also included in the paper. Its accompanying lesson activities are all aligned to MOE’s syllabus, and designed to be pedagogically sound. They are pegged to the learning of specific skills – such as reading, comprehension, composition and grammar.

 

8)      ICAS

Pupils who display a strong foundation in the English Language are selected to sit for the International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) English tests. The ICAS English tests assess reading and language skills in a range of contexts. Pupils read a variety of text types of texts and answer questions based on these texts.

 

9)      NSCC

The school also takes part in the annual National Stamp Collecting Competition (NSCC). It is organised by Singapore Philatelic Museum (SPM) and supported by the Ministry of Education. The competition seeks to promote the study of postage stamps and philatelic materials to learn about Singapore and the world.  Through the competition selected students acquire learning and thinking skills such as language development, writing, research, organisation and creativity.
